THIS IS WHY I CREATE.
THIS IS WHY I CREATE.
The physiology of the human body is a nature that never ceases to amaze me. I am an alumnus from Boston College where I studied the operations and anatomy of the human brain and the way in which it is able to completely transform one’s existence. I first picked up a paint brush my sophomore year of college and was unaware of the trajectory that painting would take me on. Beginning with a still-life to now honing in on the figure and my own interpretation of it, I have become enveloped in the practice and appreciation of art.
We live in the twenty-first century where art has drastically evolved to encompass a range of styles. To be an artist in this period means to be free of constriction in creation and expression. We as artists living in the now create as we please with no shame, no fear, and no restrictions. We can create art solely for the purpose of creating art. As a student focused in medicine, my artistic interests lie in the human figure. I create art that expresses my reflection of what it means to be alive, art that defies conceptual and stereotypical beauty, and art that unifies abstraction and figuration.
Recently, I completed two separate projects that tie my interests in medicine, the figure, and abstraction. For my independent project with Professor Hartmut Austen at Boston College, I created two paintings that reflect my experience within the operating room. My works include an array of emotional interpretations of what it means to be a patient on the operating table and on the peri-operative team. For my senior minor project, I created a body of work that defies the concept of beauty through a grotesque and anatomical sense with a focus in abstraction to paint my comprehension of what it means to be mortal. Oftentimes, the sight of the human body’s interior can be frightening; however, the same organs that repel us, maintain us, and through my art, I hope to bridge the gap between fear and beauty.
I am deeply humbled and appreciative of having the opportunity to share my work with you.
